Mendocino

Mendocino has a way of slowing life down. It is not a place you just happen to be, but after miles of winding roads, it feels like a choice to get lost for a bit. It is a small village on the Northern California coast where ocean cliffs stretch into fog and the Victorian buildings hold stories.

When I planned a romantic getaway weekend in Mendocino, I was looking for that blend of relaxation and exploration. What I found was a destination perfect for coastal walks, wine tasting, and the kind of small discoveries that make a trip feel memorable.

We had the opportunity to visit MacCallum House in Mendocino during a hosted stay (they paid). Some trips I take solo, but if you get a chance to go to Mendocino, it’s better to bring someone you love. You will want someone to share a blend of cozy evenings, great food, and scenic hikes. So we spent a few days wandering its cliffs, tasting Anderson Valley wine, and staying at one of the area’s most iconic boutique hotels.

Getting There: Santa Rosa to Mendocino via the Anderson Valley

Most visitors arriving from the San Francisco Bay Area approach Mendocino through Santa Rosa, which is where the roads start to feel rural and the scenery shifts from city blocks to vineyards and then to Redwood forests. The route from Santa Rosa to Mendocino takes just over two hours on a good day, although weekends can add traffic. Highway 128 is a beautiful drive if you enjoy driving. It winds through vineyards, cattle pastures, and towering trees before reaching the coast.

If you enjoy wine, this drive is an experience in itself. The highway passes directly through Anderson Valley, one of California’s rising wine regions. The vineyards appear one after another, each with its own personality. Most are small family-run properties. You should plan enough time for your drive to stop at at least one winery on the way in and one on the way out.

You can also visit local farm stands. We stopped at Petit Teton in Yorkville and picked up some fig jam made with port wine.

A practical tip for this route: cell service can be inconsistent as you get deeper into Anderson Valley. Download your maps before leaving Santa Rosa and keep an eye out for slow traffic once the road narrows closer to the coast. The reward for the winding drive is that moment when the trees open to reveal the Pacific Ocean, which feels like the perfect start to a weekend away.

MacCallum House Inn

Checking In: A Boutique Stay at the MacCallum House Inn

For this trip, we stayed in the MacCallum House Inn, a Mendocino boutique hotel that combines historic charm with comfortable rooms and thoughtful service. It is one of the most well-known bed-and-breakfast options in Mendocino, although it operates more like a small full-service inn with a popular restaurant and bar.

We stayed in Room 15, known as the North Barn Room. The highlight was the private hot tub that made the room feel ideal for a romantic getaway. After long walks along the cliffs, soaking under an open sky felt like a reward. The room had a fireplace, which added a warm glow during the cool coastal evenings. This style of accommodation fits perfectly into what many travelers imagine when they search for a romantic getaway on the Mendocino coast: quiet, intimate, and comfortable without being overly formal.

MacCallum House breakfast room

Breakfast at the MacCallum House is substantial. Guests choose from dishes like eggs, pancakes, or fruit plates, served in the main dining room. The dinner we had during this trip reminded me of why the place earns such consistent praise. In the evening, the dining room has a classic Mendocino feel with white tablecloths, attentive service, and a menu that changes seasonally with local ingredients. For couples planning a romantic weekend, it is an easy choice to enjoy at least one meal on-site.

See my complete review of the MacCallum House.

A tip for anyone staying here: parking can be tight during busy weekends, so arriving earlier in the afternoon rather than at night helps. Also, the inn is in the center of Mendocino Village, which means you can walk to most restaurants, shops, and coastal viewpoints. Once we parked, we did not use the car again until we packed up two days later.

Mendocino Headlands Coastal Trail

Exploring the Mendocino Headlands Coastal Trail

If Mendocino has a signature attraction, it is the Mendocino Headlands State Park. The park surrounds the village on three sides, providing dramatic ocean views, open space, and a network of easy walking paths. For couples on a romantic getaway, this is the kind of place where you can take an unhurried stroll, stop to watch the waves crash below, and share those quiet conversations that happen only when you are away from daily routines.

We spent much of one morning hiking the Mendocino Headlands Coastal Trail, a route that offers expansive views without requiring strenuous effort. The trail runs along the cliffs, passing beaches below, rock formations, and patches of wildflowers, depending on the season. The air smells of salt and pine, and the ocean is never out of sight.

Hiking in Mendocino is often described as peaceful rather than rugged, and this trail is a good example of that. You can explore for an hour or an entire afternoon. There are multiple access points from the village, including behind the visitor center and near the Big River Bridge.

Practical tips for the hike: bring a jacket even on warm days. The Mendocino coast can change from sunny to windy in minutes. Wear shoes with traction. The dirt paths are mostly flat, but there can be loose gravel or mud. If you enjoy photography, mornings often have the most dramatic light.

This walk became a highlight of the weekend. It felt romantic without trying to be, thanks to the beautiful landscape and the sound of the waves.

Mendocino Attractions for Couples

On a previous trip, we explored further afield from Mendocino along the coast. Things to do near Mendocino include:

During this trip, we focused on experiences close to the village, but the area has options for any travel style.

Big River Beach from the Mendocino Headlands Trail

Big River Beach from the Mendocino Headlands Trail

Big River Beach

At the eastern edge of Mendocino, Big River meets the ocean. The beach is wide and sandy, with views of cliffs on both sides. During low tide, couples can walk far from the river mouth. Kayak rentals are available from Mendocino Kayaks for those who want a different perspective.

Mendocino Art Center

The Mendocino Art Center highlights the creative community that has shaped the village. Exhibits change throughout the year, and the campus includes pottery studios and gallery spaces. It is a good stop for couples who enjoy browsing local crafts.

Ford House Museum

Ford House Museum

Located near the Headlands Trail, the Ford House Museum offers insight into the area’s history, from early logging days to its transition into an artist colony. It is a small stop, but it adds context to the coastal views.

Point Cabrillo Light Station

A short drive north of Mendocino, Point Cabrillo Light Station sits like a lone sentinel along the coast. A few times a year, you can climb up to the top of the lighthouse. See their website for details.

Restaurants in Mendocino

In addition to the wonderful restaurant at the MacCallum House, Mendocino has some other popular restaurants. If you want dinner at the popular Patterson’s Pub or Luna Trattoria, you may need to get there early or plan to eat late, as the wait around 6 pm can easily take an hour.

Frankie's

Frankie’s

On one of our two evenings, we had pizza and ice cream at the more casual Frankie’s. They do a good job in both their specialties. When you are there, get a peek at the back of their large menu hanging from the ceiling to see the kind of questions the staff gets from customers that bring them amusement. Questions like:

  • What’s on the chees pizza?
  • How large is the 10″ pizza?
  • How many scoops are in the double?
  • Is the mushroom ice cream psychedelic?
  • Do you know where I can get some pizza around here?

Try not to add to their list.

Main Street Square

Shopping in Mendocino

Mendocino is not a large town. You can theoretically get to every shop in town on a weekend. You will find a combination of souvenirs, artwork, crafts, local agricultural products, outdoor gear, books, and fashion. There are also delicious bakeries like the small Garden Bakery right next to the MacCallum House, as well as a shop that only sells socks.

Wine Tasting in Anderson Valley: Lula Cellars and Toulouse Vineyards

A Mendocino romantic getaway weekend is not complete without wine tasting, so make a stop coming or going in the Anderson Valley. The valley is known for Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, and sparkling wines. During this trip, we tasted wines at Lula Cellars and Toulouse Vineyards, both of which offered memorable experiences.

Lula Cellars

Lula Cellars

Lula Cellars sits on Guntly Road, just outside Philo. The tasting room overlooks open fields and vineyard rows. The staff were friendly, and the tasting was relaxed and unhurried. The wines we tasted included:

  • 2022 Anderson Valley Chardonnay
  • 2023 Skycrest Vineyard Chardonnay
  • NV Guntly Red blend
  • 2022 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir
  • 2022 Lula Vineyard Pinot Noir
  • 2021 Fashauer Vineyard Zinfandel

The $15 tasting fee was waived with purchase or with membership in the wine club, something many small wineries still offer. Our particular tasting fee was comped (paid for) by the winery.

The Anderson Valley Chardonnay is a cold-weather Chardonnay, so quite different from the buttery oaked Chardonnays you may find in nearby Napa and Sonoma. Expect something with a high acidity.

The Guntly Red was an easy-drinking blend that works well for casual dinners. It was the only wine we tasted that was not entirely from the Anderson Valley. It is 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the Cab coming from just over the border into Sonoma County. It was very fruit-forward on the nose.

Their signature wine is the Lula Vineyard Pinot, which is an estate wine. All their Pinots and the Zinfandel are grown in the cool climate between the vineyard and the coast, and are lower alcohol wines.

Couples looking for a wine tasting experience that feels intimate without being formal will enjoy Lula Cellars. You can taste indoors or outside, and the atmosphere is relaxed. The staff member who served us was knowledgeable and welcoming.

Toulouse Vineyards

Toulouse Vineyards

Toulouse Vineyards is only a short drive from Lula, but it has a different feel. The tasting room sits on a hill with wide views of the surrounding valley. The fall tasting menu included:

  • Rita’s Toulouse Botanical Aperitif
  • 2023 Estate Rosé of Pinot Noir
  • 2021 Valdiguié
  • 2022 Anderson Valley Pinot Noir
  • 2021 Estate Pinot Noir

The tasting fee has gone up to $25 at Toulouse Vineyards, from the $10 it was five years ago. The fee is again waived with purchase. The aperitif was unexpected. It is made from light-pressed estate Pinot Noir infused with organic botanicals. It can be served over ice or mixed into a spritz. The rosé was bright and fresh, while the Estate Pinot Noir had rich notes of plum and spice.

Both wineries are ideal additions to a romantic Mendocino weekend. They allow you to take your time, soak in the scenery, and share conversations over good wine. If you plan to buy bottles to bring home, remember that coastal evenings pair beautifully with Anderson Valley Pinot Noir.

Final Thoughts

Pack your sweatshirt and your rain gear, but also pack a pair of sunglasses and a hat when you go to Mendocino. The weather in the area has many different moods, and you might see all of them on a single weekend. Take advantage of the sunny afternoons to hike and view the scenery. Take advantage of the cool evenings to cuddle in front of a fire with the one you love.
